Native Tree Gardening
There's still time to plant natives. If trees are what you need, some tips:
Large natives: coast live oak, valley oak, coast redwood, madrone, and California bay.
Lower-growing trees: toyon, Pacific wax myrtle, redbud, and large ceanothus.
Good for wet areas and creek restoration: red and white alders, native willows.
Native trees use less water, so don't plant them near water-demanding varieties. Oaks, for example, expect five months of dry soil.
Note: While fall is the best time to plant, winter is a good time for pruning.
